Abstract
  • The main goal of the Coastal Zone (CZ) model WASP6 in EUROCAT is to measure the impact of the actual human activities in the catchment on the CZ itself, and to estimate how this impact could change as consequence of changes in catchment management. The most important impact of Po Catchment on the North Adriatic Coastal zone is surely eutrophication caused by nutrients loads discharged by the river. With this focus, a dynamic water quality model has been implemented. First of all the Coastal Zone affected by the Po river discharge has been soundly defined with a scientific approach on the basis of salinity variability pattern. Subsequent the EPA water quality model WASP6 has been implemented on the Po Catchment (POCAT) CZ so defined. The choice of WASP6 is determined by the easy linkage between the model applied on the catchment (MONERIS) and the CZ model and by the great quantity of outputs given by the model. In fact, with the output of WASP6 it is possibile to easily calculate daily TRIX values, the trophic state index used in the italian legislative framework (d.lgs. 152/99). Such a way it is possible to determine the actual average trophic state and the eutrophic risk, i.e. the probability that a single portion of the POCAT CZ may display a trophic state classified as poor or bad (TRIX>5, TRIX>6). With such a detailed study, it is possibile to integrate the catchment model results and the coastal zone model results in one costs-benefits analysis carried by a specific application of the DEFINITE model, as described in POCAT D3.3 and POCAT D3.4. Modelling the North-Western Adriatic coastal zone The run of two sets of hypothetical CZ scenarios (with simple percent variation of nutrient input) shows that Po have a major influence on the POCAT CZ, but the influence of the North adriatic sea is significative too. This study puts also into evidence that the POCAT CZ has a significative resistence to change its trophic state: only with great reduction of nutrient loads it is possibile to reach a good trophic state (TRIX<4). In the second set of scenarios, the CZ model has been used in series with MONERIS application on the Po catchment, in order to estimate the impacts of the anthropic activities in the catchment on CZ at 2008 and 2016 for different future scenarios. As consequence of the policy options considered in the POT and DG scenarios, the average trophic state of the Coastal Zone improves from poor status to moderate status (TRIX between 4 and 5) but the area closest to the Po delta still have high probability (about 40%) to present critical eutrophication phenomena (TRIX>6).
