Abstract

• The Institute for Atmospheric Pollution of the Italian National Research Council (CNR-IIA) and the Consejo Superior Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC) have focused on the current chemical pollution problems on the Mediterranean Sea within the TT4 of ELME project. This report contributed to the Deliverable 4.1: Study of current chemical pollution problems (with initial focus on the NE Atlantic), and identification of principal causes in relation to socio-economic Drivers. The deliverable construction passed through the development of the following milestones that in the case of CNR-IIA and CSIC are focused on the Mediterranean Sea: · Identification of principal chemical pollution problems at a regional scale · Identification of principal causes of chemical pollution problems and linkages to socio-economic Drivers After a brief introduction on the case study from a physical point of view, some information is given on socio-economy generating Pressures on the Mediterranean. Then, the methodology for selecting group of substances on which developing the study is provided and the identification on main pollutants leads to the uncertainty assessment and to some recommendations.
