- The corrosion behaviour of metal alloys in polar seawater is scarcely defined and, in particular, the effects of biofilm settlement on stainless steel corrosion resistance are not well established. In the European conditions the biofilms increase the risk of both localised corrosion onset and the propagation rate of corrosion attacks. These bioeffects are resulted almost independent of seasons, geographic location and light conditions in the temperature range 8 - 30 °C. However, any artificial shifting of the seawater temperature higher than 30 °C and lower than 8°C drastically reduces the interference. Indeed, in the ambit of the PNRA project an underwater data acquisition system, set up within the project and monitoring both seawater temperature and salinity together with the electrochemical behaviour (free corrosion potential and the corrosion current) of several stainless steel samples, was immersed and recovered after one year at Ny-Ålesund (Svalbard Islands). As regards the measured variables, the data stored show a perfect running of the apparatus. The stainless steels tested were the AISI 304 and 316, Avesta 254 SMO and 904L grades. Some samples of the first two grades showed a severe corrosion attack, the last two were not corroded. Concerning stainless steel electrochemical behaviour, also the cathodic reaction on stainless steel surface was defined. (literal)
