  • Clinicians, physiologists and pathophysiologists must interact with molecular biologists and all together may receive potent inputs from biotechnology development. Many processes at the molecular level represent the basic mechanisms involved in the genesis and developing of diseases as well as in their different degree of aggressiveness. The natural history of a disease derives from a multifactorial interaction among genetic characteristics, environmental agents, immunoreactivity of the subject and psychological conditions. Those factors could play a different role, however the final message at the cellular level is often similar and sometimes possibly be the same. The interactions among different research fields (clinical evaluation of pathological syndromes, pathophysiological conditions, experimental physiology and pathophysiology, cellular and molecular responses, genes modulation, bioinformatics) could clarify and interprete common pathways as well as dissimilarities. In cardiovascular disease and in oncology many mechanisms overlap: cellular migration and proliferation, extracellular matrix derangement, angiogenesis, apoptosis, thrombogenesis…. An European Task Force and/or Working Group, by overcoming the research fragmentations and the close specificity of single areas, may offer the opportunity of a “global” vision of disease mechanisms and suggest better ways to utilize already available knowledge and tools. Descrizione sintetica
  • The Workshop “Molecular signaling in cardiovascular and oncological diseases: similar and shared pathways” intends to put together leading experts in cardiovascular diseases and oncology, molecular biology and information technology to evaluate similar and shared pathways and molecular signals during disease development. The definition of similarities and differences at the molecular level could help to define the multifactorial role in cell to cell communication, to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of diseases and to prospect possible therapeutical interventions. This extensive collaboration strategy in multidisciplinary fields could offer a new background platform for the interdisciplinary research in medicine. Investigators working in different fields often do not have the possibility of interactions; furthermore experimental research, from in vitro to in vivo, needs continuous feed-backs from the clinical arena and viceversa. The proposal of this workshop reflects the intention to induce an interaction among investigators of different disciplines, spanning from clinical to molecular level; to identify similarities and differences in the hope that a common effort could accelerate understanding of pathophysiology and generate therapeutical suggestions; to get the opportunity of bio-information technology cooperation.
