Descrizione sintetica
  • The possibility of obtaining via radioactivity concentration measurements of SPM the mass balance of particulate material exchanged at the port inlets of the Venice Lagoon is shown. The methodology proposed is based essentially on the measurements of the concentration of radionuclides contained in SPM entering and going out of the lagoon. The obtained balance indications, in particular the one with 7Be, must be considered strictly relative to the period investigated. It was particularly highlighted a persisting erosion acting in the Malamocco Basin and an accumulation phase for the Lido Treporti Basin while an intermediate situation is recognised for Chioggia. These results are in perfect agreement with what was found in a recent detailed radiochronological study of the sedimentary records in the North and Central lagoon areas, and with what was found in a previous detailed radiochronological evaluation regarding the area included between the Industrial Area and the town of Venice. The radiochemical data regarding the homogeneity of atmospheric radionuclide deposition all over the lagoon of Venice obtained are essential for obtaining radionuclide flux data. Moreover the distribution map of 7Be had already given some preliminary indications on the sedimentary situation now established in a quantitative way. The radiochemical methodology proposed appears to be of great help to evaluate the evolutionary tendency of the lagoon in its entirety and also on a basin level. The time scale investigated with 7Be makes this radionuclide particularly useful not only for quantifying seasonal effects but also for evaluating the consequences of any possible alterations of the hydraulic regulations at the port inlets.
