Abstract
  • The invention relates to an Organic Electroluminescent Device (OLED) based on a novel class of electrophosphorescent emitting molecules with high emission efficiencies. This new emitters are cyclometallated complexes of transition metals having the general formula MLmEpX(n-m-2p) where M is a transition metal bearing n positive charges (Re, Os, Ir, Pt), L and E are terdentate ligands having the general schematic structure: Where R1, R2, R3 are alkyl-, aryl-, carboxyl-, alcoxyl-, silyl- substituents or hydrogen, halogen, amine and X is a negatively charged atom or group. The emitting layer consists of one or more emitters embedded in an organic hosting materials having charge conduction properties for both positive and negative charges and having the suitable electronic energy levels in order to maximize electronic energy transfer to the phosphorescent emitter. The emitting layer is sandwiched between two electrodes, one of which is transparent to visible light. Better performances are achieved when more organic layers having charge conduction properties and suitable ionization potentials and electron affinities are present between the emitting layer and the electrodes. In one of the preferred embodiment to carry out the invention the device has a four layer structure and the emitting layer is a mixed organic matrix with 6% by weight of the emitter. The characteristics and performances of the devices with five different emitters are reported in the table. emitter Efficiency at 100 cd/m2 Efficiency at 1000 cd/m2 CIE coordinates PtL1Cl 32.6 cd/A 34.0 cd/A 0.23 ; 0.57 PtL2Cl 17.8 cd/A 16.8 cd/A 0.14 ; 0.46 PtL3Cl 25.2 cd/A 25.5 cd/A 0.20 ; 0.76 PtL4Cl 38.5 cd/A 35.3 cd/A 0.48 ; 0.51 PtL5Cl 14.0 cd/A 13.9 cd/A 0.24 ; 0.63 (literal)
