  • Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) is the best performing, cost effective class of piezoelectric materials known to date. Its success is strongly related to the flexibility in terms of composition (Zr/Ti ratio, use of different dopants) and microstructure. In particular, when PZT is doped with Nb and coupled with a controlled porous microstructure, it becomes a promising candidate for ultrasonic transducer applications. To obtain high piezoelectric responses it is important to produce dense ceramics: in this respect, the porosity is generally considered a defect that causes the decreasing of the mechanical and piezoelectric properties. On the other hand, the introduction of tailored porosity can considerably improve the performances of ultrasonic devices, such as hydrophones (Geis et al., 2000) or medical diagnostic devices (Smith, 1989).
