Abstract
  • IEA estimates in its World Energy Outlook 2008 indicate that the world energy consumption amounted to 11.4 Gtoe in 2005 and it will grow up of about 30% in 2020, with an average annual rate of 1.8%. The increase in consumption is due predominantly to the electricity sector (50%) and to the transport sector (20%). Fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) will cover about 80% of this growth: the dominant primary energy source will be from crude, whose world reserves are concentrated to 75% in a few countries of the Middle East, a region of strong political instability.
