  • (continued) Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA) is implemented at large distance z from nozzle (non-dimensional abscissa Zita>100) for different radial co-ordinates (r=4, 5 mm) at the spray periphery. Very small droplets (average size less than 5 micron) are found, at injection pressures above 40 MPa, in the inner region (r < 2 mm) of the spray by both the experimental techniques. The presence of a class of very fine droplets (size below 1 micron) is argued by TCLE at locations lying along the spray centerline. Complementary character about the experimental applicability of the Two Colour Laser Extinction with respect to the Phase Doppler Anemometry is discussed. Scarce correlation between droplet size and velocity is found in the spray zone situated far (Zita>100) from the injector nozzle tip. //Engineering on line Springer library: http://www.springer.de/engine/ (literal)

  • Focus is made in this paper on the sizing of liquid droplets in dense Diesel jets generated by a Common Rail injection system. The applicability of two different laser diagnostics, namely, the Phase Doppler Anemometry and the Two-Colour Extinction, is investigated and the experimental results from both the techniques are presented and discussed. Rail injection pressure is varied in the range from 40 to 120 MPa with injection time width 1 ms. A single-hole injector, electronically controlled, is used in combination with different nozzles (diameters 0.18 and 0.22 mm). Fuel is the standard fuel ISO 4113. The droplet sizes are characterised as function of radial co-ordinate r and distance z from the nozzle tip. Two Colour Laser Extinction (TCLE) technique at 632.8 nm and 832 nm is applied at distances z near to the nozzle (abscissa normalised to nozzle diameter Zita<60) at times immediately after (200-400 microseconds) the end of the fuel injection, when reasonable homogeneity within the spray region and spherical droplets are expected.(continued) (literal)
