  • Reviewer David Homan, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation) Description Heart failure is of great interest currently, especially from a public health perspective, and this book presents contributions from preeminent scientists, both bench and clinical, to summarize the important interplay between the failing heart and the thyroid gland. Purpose This book attempts to gather the most up-to-date information about the pathophysiological and clinical significance of thyroid disease in relationship to heart failure. Audience Students, physicians in training, and clinicians involved in the management of heart failure patients are the intended readers. The authors are at the cutting-edge of thyroid and heart failure research from both an MD and PhD perspective. Features This book does a wonderful job of covering the epidemiology and pathophysiology of heart failure. At the same time, it addresses the bench work that is being done to better understand the role that the thyroid gland plays in the development and progression of heart failure. The figures are not as sharp as some, and tend to be confusing without the captions. Assessment This is a well designed book for caregivers whose primary focus is heart failure. The depth of laboratory data may be somewhat tedious for primary clinicians, but it significantly contributes to the value of this excellent heart failure resource. (literal)

  • Both thyroid dysfunction and heart failure show a high prevalence in general adult population; frequently in clinical practice, a multidisciplinary approach is useful to optimize the patient's management. Although there is no doubt that a close link between cardiovascular pathophysiology and thyroid homeostasis does exist, our knowledge on the field is, however, far to be exhaustive. Thyroid hormone regulates the expression of cardiac specific functional contractile and structural proteins and plays a pivotal role in modulating both diastolic and systolic function as well as peripheral vascular resistance. The strict relationships between thyroid and heart dysfunction is strongly supported by recent evidences on a key role of an altered thyroid profile as negative prognostic predictor namely in patients with heart failure. The treatment for chronic heart failure especially in advanced stages is an open and challenged field. The potential for novel thyroid hormone therapies also based on molecular biology may thus represents an attractive area of multidisciplinary scientific interest. This book on the complex matter of thyroid-heart failure interactions is meant to be readable, integrated and as possible complete in clinical, pathophysiological and basic aspects for a large audience of readers (literal)
