  • Climate drivers as well as atmospheric input affect both short- and long-term variation of nitrogen (N) compounds in soil and water. Relationships between climate drivers (temperature and precipitation) and N concentrations were assessed for some rivers with forested catchments in North-Western Italy. The climate fingerprint on N dynamics in river catchments has been mainly evident in the last few years (2000-2005), with a high occurrence of extreme events being recorded such as drought and heavy rain. Studies on the climate-chemistry relationship at the catchment scale may help to improve understanding of how climate change, also in interaction with other drivers, will affect ecosystem functioning in the near future.
