- Abstract
- Italian, more than the other Romance languages and similarly to English, records in its lexicon a great number of syntagmatic verbs. The Italian syntagmatic verbs are slightly different from the English phrasal verbs, as the Italian ones are especially linked to the oral speech and to the familiar and informal communication. What can be considered shared between English and Italian phrasal verbs is the competence of people using them. Competent population in both countries is almost formed by native speakers. Foreigners usually achieve the same competence after a long training, or a long staying in the foreign-language country and all manifest difficulties in learning this special kind of verbs and in using them appropriately. The Italian syntagmatic verbs are, moreover, deeply rooted in dialects and northern regional languages, for this reason they are sometimes closely influenced by the local culture, environment and habits. In this communication will be illustrated the results of our interviews and the analysis of the different cognitive approaches to lexical and semantic questions acted by people in the expression of the contexts. A particular attention will be given to the modalities in which children understand and solve the meaning ambiguities that most of the Italian syntagmatic verbs present. The different outcomes will be observed in order to outline possible different modalities in which our speakers sample cope with linguistics matters and, beyond that, how is their different perception of the lexical and semantic nuances inside the same language and in particular their aware perception of the use of their native language.
