  • Organometallic compounds, in particular Schiff bases complexes, have been the subject of recent investigation in the field of NLO materials, owing to the large variety of molecular structures and electronic properties they offer, as well as the active role of the metal in switching on, or enhance, their NLO response. Here we present a series of Cu(II) complexes of salen analogues in which the two sal moieties carry different electron donor and acceptor groups in position 5 (see Chart). Their NLO properties have been investigated both experimentally (EFISH and solvatochromic measurements) and by DFT studies. A careful analysis of their electronic spectra (including the results of TDDFT calculations) have allowed to identify a Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer transition which controls their NLO response.
