  • Exchange coupled triangular copper(II) clusters are currently of great interest in research areas as different as the role of polymetallic sites in enzymatic catalysis and the physics of magnetic materials.1 Recently in our group, a new template synthesis of trinuclear [Cu3L3(?3-OH)](ClO4)2 species (L = tridentate ‘half unit’ Schiff bases derived from salicylaldehydes and aliphatic diamines) has been optimised.2 These complexes show magnetic ‘spin frustration’,2,3 and a propeller-like structure (molecules with both left- and right-handed blades are obtained2), with the ‘CuL’ subunits almost perpendicular one to the other. The use of chiral diamines (1,2-diaminocyclohexane and 1,2-diphenylethylendiamine) in the template synthesis of such trinuclear species leads to only one enantiomer, suggesting the occurrence of an induced chirality due to the diamine absolute configuration. Results obtained in the synthesis and characterisation of such complexes (one example is reported in the picture) will be presented. 1. Yoon, J.; Solomon, E. I. Coord. Chem.
