- Hafnium Carbide (HfC) and Tantalum Carbide (TaC) are important members in the group of ultra high temperature ceramics (UHTCs). Thanks to melting point approaching 4000ºC, they become desirable material for structures operating at very high temperature, such as components of space aircrafts and rocket nozzles. However, due to strong covalent bonds and low self-diffusion coefficients, densification is very difficult.Commercial TaC and HfC powders have typically been processed by hot-pressing at 2200-2700°C. Sinterability is significantly affected by the quality of starting powders: fine particle size and low oxygen content are desirable characteristics for improving sinterability and thus achieving high performance ceramics. Purpose of this work was to synthesize fine HfC and TaC powders and process them at temperature below 2000°C to prevent coarsening and therefore develop fine microstructures. (literal)
