  • Piezoelectric ceramics with high amount of porosity have superior properties for applications like low frequency sensors, due to their high piezoelectric figure of merit dhgh. By introducing anisotropy of the microstructure substantial the difference of the properties in the planar towards the transverse direction has been enhanced. Starting from dry or wet shaping techniques, including tape casting, soft PZT materials with different pore volume (about 40 %), size and morphology, anisotropic and graded porosity, were produced and the piezoelectric properties were investigated [1]. The different morphologies were obtained by adding pore forming agents like starch, graphite and carbon black. The porosity graded material (with pore volume ranging from 5 to 40 vol %) show a continuously varying morphology without delamination at the interfaces between the layers, with properties tailored following the properties of the homogeneous layers[2].
