• Southern Italy regions bear a strong historical and cultural identity which constitutes a powerful factor of unity and attractiveness. In the actual international context of high competitiveness and globalization, these areas have high potentialities and a significant role for the enhancement of their resources and the strengthening of Med identity. This work attempts to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the Italian Interregional Operative Programme (PAIn) “Cultural and natural attractors and tourism”. PAIn’s aim is to enhance and promote cultural and natural heritage of Southern Italy by adopting a systemic approach and networking southern regions and their attractions. PAIn’s principles are: attractions - cultural and natural heritage as elementary units of a tourism system; poles, a bordered geographic area of particular significance and quality able to attract tourists and to trigger socio-economic development; thematic interregional networks, the autonomous supply system.
