- Environmental and oil dependence issues justify the strong research interest for innovative propulsion systems, based on hydrogen fuel cell technology, which is able to improve the driving range with respect to pure electric vehicles, and to reduce battery recharging time, maintaining the advantages of high efficiency and local zero emissions.
For a widespread commercial diffusion fuel cell vehicles need safe, lightweight and compact means of on-board hydrogen storage. Recent developments suggest that among lightweight metal hydrides the lithium alanate is very promising due to its characteristics of satisfactory adsorption capacity (up to 7%) and interesting adsorption/desorption kinetics.
