  • The introduction of biomolecules to polymer surfaces has become a relevant tool for controlling cell-biomaterial interaction. The aim of this work was to investigate on the role of mechanical properties of matrix in biological recognition. To do this, we modulated mechanical properties of hydrogels made of polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA), known for its antiadhesive properties, by varying polymer percentage. In addition, PEGDA molecules were bioactivated with RGD-peptides, well known for its ability to promote cellular attachment by binding to integrin receptors. Furthermore, by keeping constant RGD concentration and by varying PEGDA percentage, we observed only the effect of substrate stiffness, and not of biochemical signals, on cell behaviour. Mechanical properties of hydrogels were characterized by DMA and compression tests. Cell response to bioactive matrices was evaluated in relation to biological parameters, such as cell morphology, viability, adhesion and migration. (literal)
