  • Injuries or complete loss of the meniscus cause cartilage degeneration and osteoarthritis. The healing capacity of the meniscus is limited. Artificial meniscus replacement is a possible alternative to allograft transplantation, which is associated with limited availabilty, logistical difficulties and the risk of disease transmission. Within the framework of the EC-Project GRD1-2001-40401 a pilot study in sheep was conducted to evaluate surgical technique, critical defect size, implant ingrowth and postoperative mobilization using a meniscus replacement device. Both surgical methods were shown to be feasible. The total resection and replacement of the medial meniscus was only possible, when the medial collateral ligament was dissected and reconstructed, which did not show any negative effects on joint stability. In the partial defect model, tissue integration between the implant and the rest-meniscus was demonstrated. The promising results concerning tissue formation and its meniscuslike properties will have to be confirmed in future long-term studies. (literal)
