  • Pubblicazione scientifica riguardante l’identificazione dei processi molecolari che sottintendono al fenotipo derivante dalla di espressione del gene BREVIPEDICELLUS. La comparazione dei profili di espressione mediante Oligo Arrays ha rilevato un grande numero di geni coinvolti nel pathway metabolico della lignina. Analisi al microscopio confocale hanno confermato i dati ottenuti con i microarrays mostrando che il mutante deposita lignina nel fusto precocemente e in maggior quantita’. Inoltre la deposizione di lignina e’ localizzata in parti del fusto che normalmente non depositano lignina, come ad esempio nei fasci di cellule disorganizzate sull’epidermide. (literal)

Abstract
  • Members ofthe KNOX gene family have important roles in plant meristems by regulating cell division and differentiation. BREVIPEDICELLUS (BP), one ofseven KNOX genes in Arabidopsis, has a primary role in internode patterning. We carried out a comparison ofRNA expression profiles between wild-type seedlings and bp mutants at a developmental stage prior to a visible phenotypic difference. Transcript differences were found for a number ofgenes in cell wall biosynthesis, especially genes in the lignin pathway. The regulation oflignin biosynthesis by BP was demonstrated by observing increased lignin deposition in bp mutants following bolting, decreased lignification in plants overexpressing BP, and aberrant lignin deposition in discrete regions of the bp stem. Furthermore, we showed that BP bind promoters of some genes in the lignin pathway. Our results provide a metabolic fingerprint for BP and identify the lignin pathway as one of the coordinate processes that BP regulates. (literal)
