Abstract
  • Thebone marrow donor registry of Lombardy comprises over 68000 donors. Our aim was to analyse HLA frequencies based on place of birth (province) ofdonors born in Lombardy. Materials and methods: 20 of 21 laboratoriesparticipatedinthestudy;only records withplace of birth within the region wereconsidered. HLA alleles were chosen according to suggestions of Schipper et. al(1996). For frequencyanalysis, the maximum likelihood method according tothe expectation-maximization algorithm was used. Results: 62844 records wereavailable for analysis, 33491(53.3%) of which were eligible. 11.1% of donorswas notborn inthe province of residence. Phenotype frequencies: of the 9623HLA-A,B phenotypes, 4703 (50.77%) were expressed once. Of the 7693HLA,A,B,DR phenotypes, 6564(85.32%) were expressed once. The mostfrequent phenotypes were HLA-A2,3;B35,51 (carried by 139 donors) and HLA-A29,33;B14,44;DR1,7 (15 donors). Haplotypefrequencies: HLA-A2, B51 and HLA-A1,B8,DR3 were the most frequent haplotypes. The minimumnumber ofHLA-A,B haplotypes (% of total) whose frequency added to50% varied from6.1% to 16.4% in different provinces; forHLA-A,B,DR, it varied from 7.7% to 25.9%. Conclusions: some diversity among the 11 provinces was evidenced. Toimprove theanalysisfromthe province to the commune level, missing datamustbecompleted. Thiswillallow us to devise new strategies for donor recruitmenttogether withour bone marrow donor association (ADMO). (literal)
