Abstract
  • study is to describe the elderly population of Talana as far as regards its socio-demographic features and its cognitive and functional status. Methods The elderly population of Talana, an isolated village in Ogliastra with 1200 inhabitants, has undergone an epidemiological screening comprehensive of medical history, clinical examination, blood sample tests and administering of an instruments' battery aimed to assess cognitive and functional status. The battery of tool includes a structured interview, Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Clock Drawing Test, Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Activity of Daily Living (ADL) and Istrumental Activity of Daily Living (IADL) . Results At the moment among the elderly of Talana, which are about the 30% of the total population, 130 subjects aged between 60 and 91 have been examined. In our sample mean age is 73.4 years, 57.7% are females and 41.5 are males, 86.72 have a low level of formal education (ranging 0 to 4 years of education) and 13.28 have a medium level of formal education (ranging from 5 to 7 years of education), about 10% are illiterate while 11% have some reading ability. The mean MMSE score, among the 118 subjects to whom it has been administered, is 25.60 (adjusted for age and education); mean GDS score is 2.24; mean Clock Test score is 4.92; mean ADL score is 5.6 and mean IADL is 5.8. Between MMSE and age we found a correlation of -0.3 (p<0.01), between MMSE and Clock Test we found a correlation of 0.68 (p<0.01), while between MMSE and ADL we found a correlation of 0.31 (p<0.01). Due to clinical history and cognitive evaluation 14.4% of people resulted as suspected for a cognitive impairment (mean MMSE score of 21.2). Conclusions Still little is known about prevalence, risk factors and environmental influence on cognitive impairment and dementing disorders in rural population. These results are part of a first phase of the study; during a second phase suspected cases for cognitive impairment will undergo a more detailed dementia assessment that will allow gaining further knowledge on this field Bibliography Angius A. et al.
