- Abstract
- Even if multiaperture radiofrequency (rf) ion sources have been approved for the neutral beam
injector of the ITER project, their physics is far from being completely understood. Among the
most important questions, we list: scaling of optimal frequency and minimum working pressure
with size, applied magnetic field and wall conditions, uniformity of the extracted beam, both within
each beamlet and from one beamlet to another.
Together with the full size source (40A, 1MV) elsewhere reported, a 60 kV ion source (9
beamlets of 15 mA each of H-
) is being developed at Consorzio RFX, for its versatility in
experimental campaigns and for training. Magnetic configuration can achieve a minimum |B| trap
for the ion source, smoothly merged with the extraction filter. Modular design allows for quick
substitution and upgrading of the parts, mainly the rf coil module (with ferrite magnets) and the
extraction and postacceleration grids.
A repeller electrode is added after the postacceleration grid for a better control of the space
charge compensation. A 350 mm diameter drift tube allow for insertion of fast emittance scanners
(FES) and for calorimeters and for adequate pumping. Unlike most experimental sources, the design
aimed at continuous operation, which implies a laborious cooling system. Vacuum chambers are
built, while industrial validation of source drawing and of construction techniques was completed in
2010. Construction is well in progress and installation is expected for first month of 2012.
Several accessories were built at INFN-LNL and by industry, and are being tested at LNL
installations: the emittance scanner, the low power matching boxes and. the removable cesium
oven. Experiments with a small radiofrequency plasma generator are also described. (literal)
