  • Background: a not negligible amount of general population has airflow obstruction (AO) without respiratory symptoms/diseases. Aim: to assess whether different characteristics exist among subjects with AO (FEV1/FVC0.7), depending on presence/absence of respiratory symptoms/diseases in an Italian general population sample. Methods: within the European Union funded project IMCA2 (Indicators for Monitoring COPD and Asthma in the EU), a sample of 1000 subjects living in Pisa (Central Italy) was selected. An information technology tool allowed to fill in questionnaires on socio-demographic characteristics, respiratory symptoms/diseases, risk factors and to record spirometry. Statistical analyses were performed using the statistical package SPSS 13.0. (literal)
