- Purpose: Urotensin II (UII) and Urocortin (UCN) are two vasoactive peptides with increased immunoreactivities in failing myocardium. Both peptides induce hypertrophy in neonatal rat cultured cardiomyocytes but the response of adult rat cardiomyocytes remains unknown. Protein kinase B (PKB) and Glycogen synthase kinase 3b (GSK3b) are involved in the control of cardiomyocytes growth and participate to the stabilization of b-catenin, a transcriptional factor important for induction of a hypertrophic response. Myostatin (Msn) is described as a chalone for cardiomyocytes growth. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of UII and UCN on the phenotype of primary cultures of adult rats cardiomyocytes as well as their effects on the PKB-GSK3b pathway, b-catenin and Msn gene.
