- Purpose
Diode laser-induced welding of corneal tissue was investigated as a substitute of conventional stay suturing for applications to the treatment of penetrating wounds, to cataract surgery and PK.
Methods
The welding effect was induced by controlled irradiation of the cornea by means of diode laser radiation (810 nm) operating at low power (60-90 mW) in association with a chromophore (Indocyanine Green), applied in the corneal wound to enhance topic laser absorption. Forty New Zealand rabbits were selected to be subjected to both conventional and laser-assisted suturing of full-thickness corneal and sclero-corneal wounds of 5 mm in length, produced by a pre-calibrated knife. Histological examinations were performed on cornea slices obtained at 1-12 weeks after surgery.
Results
Objective observation and histological analysis during the follow up indicated that laser-induced suturing of the cornea provided a more effective healing process, developing in a shorter time and with less inflammatory and foreign-body reactions, with respect to conventional stay suturing, which resulted in a satisfactory regain of the stromal architecture.
Conclusions
This study indicated some potential advantages of laser-induced suturing of corneal tissue, such as simplification of surgical procedures, reduction of suture material, shorter healing times with less inflammatory reaction.
