- Cellulose is the most abundant polymer deriving from renewable sources. It is widely employed for producing man-made fibers, films, and other items used in textile and domestic fields. However, cellulose processing requires its dissolution and regeneration. Cellulose solutions are difficult to obtain, because of intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds, which hinder dissolution. Several dissolving systems have been tested in order to produce regenerated cellulose fibers. Water solutions of N-methylmorpholine N-oxide (NMMO) are suitable cellulose dissolving systems, as they allow obtaining highly concentrated and anisotropic cellulose solutions. (literal)
