  • Nowadays several research efforts are concentrated on studying biological production of hydrogen, the latter being suitable as a pollution-free fuel. Several physico-chemical factors play a key role in the hydrogen biotechnological production. It was demonstrated that immobilized cell cultures have advantages over the suspension cultures in terms of higher concentration of the biomass and cell growth rate. In this work, crosslinked alginate-based systems were developed in order to obtain biodegradable and water-insoluble materials, suitable for cell immobilization. Blends of alginate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were prepared and characterized. Furthermore, polyethylene glycol (PEG) modified alginate was prepared in order to obtain a macroporous network with increased diffusion rate of nutrients. (literal)
