• The performance of the BOttom dwelling demersal biomass Index (BOI), derived from the ratio between “bottom dwelling fish\" and \"demersal fish” biomass is reported for two areas characterised by a reduction of trawling effort. The index has been proposed as a simple bio indicator of the status of exploited demersal resources. Based on the experience of fishermen, the BOI assumes that trawling removes the bottom dwelling fish species first so that, the greater the fishing effort is the smaller the BOI value becomes. In order to test the index performance, data were gathered from before and after a trawling ban on the continental shelf of the Gulf of Castellammare (North-western Sicily). Another data set was analysed from the Adventure Bank (South-western Strait of Sicily), where a reduction of trawling effort has occurred since the early nineties. The BOI values significantly increased during the period after the trawling ban from those obtained for the period before the trawling ban in the Gulf of Castellammare. In the same way an increase of the BOI values co-occurred with a reduction of trawling effort on the Adventure Bank. (literal)
