Abstract

• Catches related of Palinurus elephas (Crustacea Decapoda) by different fishing gear were estimated in Italy ( Sicily) and Greece (Thracian sea) during the years 1997 to 1999. Both zones of study were divided into 5 and 3 strata respectively; in each stratum was chosen a minimum of two sample ports. A total of 11 ports were sorted in Italy and 12 in Greece. Total catches were estimated per stratum and season, for the whole area and year. A census of 1642 and 702 artisanal fishing boats was taken in Italy and Greece respectively. In Italy, total catches were about 20.000 kg in the first year ('97-98) and 15.000 kg in the second year ('98-99). In Greece catches were about 1.559 kg in the first year and 1.806 kg in the second year. The maximum catch was in summer in both study areas. This study reveals that lobster catches represent about 1% of total catches in Italy and 0.2% in Greece, but considering its high cost, the resource accounts for a high value in the catch. (literal)
