Abstract
  • In the last decade many studies focused on the multitude of chemicals which everyday enter the aquatic environment exerting combined long-term effects on aquatic ecosystems. Hormones, flame retardants, pesticides, biocides are examples of chemicals which due to their interactions with the endocrine system are receiving great attention. Identifying these toxicants and their effects is important for the protection of aquatic life and human health. Highly chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs), are highly toxic and suspected carcinogens, and among the most harmful contaminants of groundwaters. Although a reduction in toxicity is generally expected from bioremediation processes, dechlorination- based biochemical treatment of contaminated aquifers might result in more toxic daughter compounds. Toxicity testing should be used to monitor the efficacy of bioremediation treatments. However, standard toxicity tests are not appropriate for groundwater priority contaminants and particularly volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The development of sensitive procedures capable to verify the effectiveness of bioremediation treatments is a fundamental step for the protection of groundwater. (literal)
