- Abstract
- Many technology fields require the fabrication of multifunctional materials that can exhibit synergistic performances. To manufacture such materials we use plastics with colloidal nanocrystals as nanofillers appropriately merged together. The resulting materials exhibit enhanced characteristics compared to the matrix or fillers alone. The plastics are the common starting point for the composite materials produced in this reasearch activity, because they exhibit inherently excellent processability simultaneously with good mechanical properties, are lightweight, and low cost. These characteristics make them ideal candidates for manufacturing and product design. They are classified in different kinds, such as thermoplastic and thermoset resins, electrically conductive polymers, biocompatible plastics, etc. The colloidal nanocrystal fillers are synthesized using wet-chemical approaches. They are excellent candidates for nanofillers, because of their size- and shape- dependent physical, optical, electronic, magnetic and conductive properties, and their potential ease of integration with existing plastic technologies.
