  • The main activities will be oriented to study the effects induced by global changes (climatic change and long-range transboundary air pollution) on mechanism and processes in lakes and rivers around the world. The activity will be developed using (i) long term data sets of meteo-climatic, limnological and biological variables and, for selected hydrological and chemical variables data collected in real-time at high resolution; (ii) updating, existing time series of meteorological, physical, chemical and limnological data, maintained according the LTER Italy network requirements; (iii) paleoclimatic and paleolimnological approach for the reconstruction of lakes evolution. The ecological evolution of this model system will be studied in the frame of the impact of climate change on phytoplankton, zooplankton and bacterioplankton. Paleolimnological techniques will be also used to find out the reference condition for lakes in sub-alpine areas. Sampling of atmospheric depositions in forested area and sampling of rivers and lakes will be addressed on nutrients and micropollutants. Prognostic and diagnostic models will also be applied to study the hydrology of tributaries of Lake Maggiore. (literal)
